60 Years After JFK’s Death, 校友 Author Finds Missing Link

Was the star of NASA’s first female astronaut program linked to the assassination 约翰·F总统. 肯尼迪?

富兰克林 & 马歇尔 alum Mary 哈弗斯蒂克 ’82 set out to create a film spotlighting 女飞行员杰里·科布. But when 哈弗斯蒂克 stumbled upon Cobb’s ties to the JFK assassination, she flipped the script.

The biopic morphed into a book, 和 哈弗斯蒂克 celebrated the release of “我认识的一个女人11月. 14. It hit bookshelves just in time for the 60th anniversary of the Nov. 1963年2月22日.

“I was trying to go for a patriotic story, uncovering cool history about women who did great things in our country 和 fought for our rights. 但我最后还是说了出来 a much darker tale,” 哈弗斯蒂克 said.

Evidence places Cobb within close proximity to JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on that 悲惨的一天. To complicate matters, 哈弗斯蒂克 unearthed remarkable similarities between Jerrie Cobb 和 June Cobb, an American informant.

“Whoever this June Cobb was, her name appeared in thous和s of pages of government files that were part of the investigation into 肯尼迪’s death,” the author writes.

An accomplished independent filmmaker, 哈弗斯蒂克’s initial plan was to create a film about the “Mercury 13,” a group of female aviators tested to be the first women astronauts. But a startling revelation – coupled with a warning from a government agent – led 哈弗斯蒂克 down a 10-year trail of Cold War espionage plots 和 CIA secrets.

“我认识的一个女人” – 哈弗斯蒂克’s first book – has been named to the Barnes 和 Noble Best Literary Nonfiction list 和 garnered praise from the likes of 《冰球突破官网》, 每日电讯报(英国)这个评论. However, she’s bracing for critique.

“I am expecting pushback,” 哈弗斯蒂克 said. “Anytime you put forward something that 会被质疑吗.”

哈弗斯蒂克 theorizes that Jerrie (or perhaps, June) Cobb is a missing link in the 肯尼迪 assassination, 和 has a decade of research 和 1,600 footnotes to prove it.

“I did not come into this with a conspiratorial mindset,” 哈弗斯蒂克 said.

Like the trailblazing women she often 特性 in storylines, 哈弗斯蒂克’s path from F&M to filmmaking was equally unconventional. 事实上,她的专业是地质学.

哈弗斯蒂克 discovered a love of film during a senior year trip to the Yellowstone Bighorn 研究 Association field camp in Montana. 附近的雷德洛奇镇是 这里有一家老式电影院.

“I found that where I wanted to be every week was at the cinema,” 哈弗斯蒂克 said.

From there, she forged her own path into independent filmmaking in the 1980s. 哈弗斯蒂克 & 美居电影制片厂 can be found just blocks from campus.

“You might not think there is a transference [between] telling stories of rock 和 earth formations versus telling stories of people,”她说。. “但也有一些 actual commonalities in rooting out truisms in either type of story.”

哈弗斯蒂克的F&M education played another key role in her new book’s development: access to Shadek Fackenthal Library for research.

“I wound up spending far 和 away more time at the F&带着我的校友卡去M图书馆 than I had ever spent there as a student,”她说。.

“哈弗斯蒂克 distills a prodigious amount of research into a fast-moving story… As 美国的新历史.S. espionage, ‘我认识的一个女人’ is an absorbing read.”
